Childhood Inspiration

I still know their home phone number...you know, from back in the days when people had actual home phones.  I can almost smell the scent of hay in their barn where we played on bales piled to the roof, like we were on top of the world.

We were pet detectives finding homes for abandoned kittens and heroes rescuing helpless tadpoles from nearly dried-up puddles. We were architects mortaring stones together to build our own "rock fort," and we were runaway bandits on our go-cart, finding secret hideouts where no kid had gone before.  We were masters of Hide and Seek and Capture the Flag, and we were door-to-door salesmen peddling our homemade wind chimes to our gracious neighbors.  We were the ABCD: Anderson-Blades Club Detectives of Skyline Hills, and our headquarters were at our mailbox, where we met daily to discuss business plans for our next adventures - rain or shine.

These were the days of a carefree childhood, wild imagination, and dreams larger than life. These were the ones who taught us friendship, faith, and fierce loyalty.  Our friendship spanned across the dirt road and beyond the fences into the wide open fields and out into the great unknown...

It's been almost a decade since the four of us have been all together in the same place, and today was the day we finally reunited. Among us, we now have eight beautiful children, four wonderful husbands, and two sets of loving parents who still consider us all their own children.  We are mothers, missionaries, and doctors. We have walked through life's deepest valleys and have been on top of the world.  We are still detectives, architects, and entrepreneurs as we discover life's greatest joys, build our homes, grow our families, and pursue our dreams.

Today, I was reminded of the simplicity and yet the abundance of our childhood days as I watched our own children playing together. We had our whole lives ahead, and yet we took each day one at a time, never fearing tomorrow. We let our imaginations run wild, and we embraced the freedom of the great unknown.  We loved with reckless abandon and never shied away from a challenge.

Oh, that we would hold onto those precious characteristics even in our grown-up lives today! May we continue to dream and let our hearts run wild. May we be the kind of friend who is fully present, rain or shine.  May we not be afraid to get our hands dirty or to rescue the abandoned and the lonely.

May this friendship that spanned the dirt road [and that will soon span many continents] be a constant reminder of what this life is all about.

Meet you at the mailbox,
L
